Digital-only editions of classic films will be available on October 17, 2018.
The National Digital Library of Canada announced on Thursday that the digital edition of the 1927 classic will be released in the fall of 2019.
“The Great GATSBY is a timeless classic that speaks to every generation and is the perfect gift for any collector or lover of the American Dream,” said NDL Chief Information Officer and Co-founder Mike Wiens.
“It is an exciting time to be a part of the Canadian digital library and bring this timeless film to life with digital formats that allow us to create a richer and more expansive digital experience for the public.”
The digital edition will include a collection of original and previously unseen photographs and original manuscripts.
It will also include audio commentary from film and TV creators and filmmakers as well as an archive of films and TV series that are available through the National Film Board of Canada.
The digital editions will be the first of its kind in Canada.
Previous editions were available exclusively in black and white.
The digital edition also includes a collection, called the GATSBIG Collection, of rare photographs, rare manuscripts and original and recently acquired film.
The GATSBET Collection includes films and television series that have been released by the National Archives and other government departments and archives, as well the Library of Congress.
The Great Depression-era film The Great Train Robbery and the Great Train Chase are among the Gatsbys that are part of that collection.
The Great Grandfather story of Charles Foster Kane and his wife is also part of this collection.
The NDL Digital Library will also release a digital edition in 2019 of The Old Man and the Sea, the final film in the popular 1939 romantic comedy The Magnificent Ambersons.
“This digital edition is an essential piece of the Library’s collection,” said Wiens, who was formerly a vice-president of the NDL.
“We are thrilled to be able to bring this classic to the digital age.”
The GatsBET is part of a collection that also includes The Old Woman and the Boy, The Wizard of Oz and The Seven Dwarfs.
